BUCS 2025/26 Round Up

The University of Edinburgh has enjoyed another outstanding year of sporting success, with students delivering exceptional performances across the national university sport landscape. From league triumphs, to championship medals, the season has been powerful showcase of talent, determination and team spirit.

Across the academic year, more than 1,150 British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) and Scottish Student Sport (SSS) fixtures were played, highlighting the scale and strength of sport at the University. Edinburgh currently holds an impressive 5th place position in the overall BUCS standings.

This season, 121 teams represented the University in league and knockout competition, collectively securing 14 league titles. Success also came in cup competitions, with 13 teams reaching finals and six lifting their respective trophies. More than 1,000 student athletes competed across over 50 BUCS competitions.

Promotion success was another major highlight, with 11 teams moving up across various leagues. Among the standout achievements were Badminton Men’s and Women’s 1s teams and Men’s Tennis 1s earning promotion to BUCS Premier Tier, while Women’s Lacrosse 1s secured promotion to BUCS Premier North 1.

The University also enjoyed an exceptional Big BUCS Wednesday, with four Women’s 1st teams competing on the national stage in Badminton, Fencing, Lacrosse and Tennis. Fencing claimed the National Championship title, while both Lacrosse and Tennis celebrated National Trophy victories.

Further success followed in the Conference Cup Finals in March, where nine teams reached the finals and three added silverware to an already memorable season.

At BUCS Nationals, our athletes again demonstrated their quality against the best student competitors across the country. A total of 111 athletes competed across six sports, returning with an impressive haul of 20 medals. Among the standout individual performances, Ciara Schlosshan won gold in the 50m, 100m, and 200m Butterfly events, while Archie Goodburn secured gold in the 50m and 100m breaststroke. In Karate, Adam Hamill claimed gold in the senior kumite ~67kg category and Joe Gallagher took gold in the senior kumite ~76kg division.

The Orienteering Club continued its remarkable dominance on the national stage, finishing top of the BUCS table once again. The club earned four medals alongside overall men’s and women’s team golds, amassing an outstanding 114 BUCS points; an impressive 62 points ahead of the next closest university.

Reflecting the breadth and consistency of sporting excellence across the University, 13 sports finished the season ranked within the top five of their respective BUCS standings.

To round off an incredible year, the University earned four prestigious nominations at the SSS Awards:

Mat Trodden (Swimming) – Coach of the Year

Megan Keith (Athletics) – Female Athlete of the Year

Madeleine Bell (Karate) – Volunteer of the Year

Men’s Hockey 1’s – Team of the Year

Together, these achievements mark another landmark year for sport at the University of Edinburgh and celebrate the dedication, ambition and success of its student athletes, coaches and clubs.
