Sport & Exercise leads the way in professional Golf

The University of Edinburgh continues to excel as global leaders in elite and professional golf as Professor Dr. Andrew Murray, who is a consultant for sport and exercise medicine at The University's Sport & Exercise Clinic, FASIC, continues his sixth year as Chief Medical and Scientific Officer across global golf tours.

Dr Andrew Murray is Chief Medical and Scientific Officer for the DP World Tour, Ladies European Tour, Golfer 4 Disability Tour (G4D), Ryder Cup Europe, and the European Tour Health and Performance Institutes, responsible for their global scientific and medical strategy, operational delivery of  over 130 events in 32 countries, and extensive research and development programs. 

In 2024, The Open Championship, and the AIG Womens Open Championship return to Scotland, where Dr Murray will head up health and performance services for the players. FASIC Sport & Exercise Medicine clinic physiotherapist Peter Mitchell also continues to work alongside pro and elite golfers as the senior physiotherapist for the Open, the AIG Womens Open, and other global events.

The 2024 season starts next week in Dubai, whilst Dr Murray is helping to launch a research program, and also mental fitness initiatives.  With golf TV programming lasting all day, these initiatives are often featured on the TV and radio broadcasts. 

Footballer Gareth Bale who plays in the Pro-am Tour has also become an ambassador for the golf and health research produced by The University of Edinburgh for The R&A. Bale has partnered with singer Niall Horan to encourage more people to play golf and understand the health benefits it provides
