University of Edinburgh athletes from a range of sports celebrate a summer of success. European Athletics U23 Champions At the 2023 European Athletics U23 Championships 3 students were crowned champions as part of the GBNI team. Alyson Bell secured an impressive personal best of 11.31 seconds in the 100m semi-final finishing 6th place in the final. In the 4x100m relay Alyson won gold with the GBNI team and secured a new championship record of (43.04). Megan Keith claimed Gold in the 5000m final finishing 9 seconds ahead of 2nd place with a time of (15:34.33). During the 2023 London Athletics meet, Megan set a new 5000m personal best of 14:56.98. Alice Goodall also ran an extraordinary race in the 10,000m discipline, leading the race from gun to tape to claim gold with a time of 33:16.45. Image Representing GB Off the back of a successful campaign at the U23 Championships Megan (5000m) and Alyson (4x100m) were both selected to represent GBNI in the upcoming 2023 Athletics World Championships in their respective disciplines. 2nd Year rower Hannah Supple was also selected as part of the GB team for the U23 World Rowing Championships in Plovdiv Bulgaria as part of the Women’s 4x team. Declan McNulty has also represented Team GB in the underwater hockey elite men’s team, competing in the Underwater Hockey Elite World Championships where the team finished 3rd overall. Cycling Champions Anna McGorum and Charlie Aldridge have both had successful summer campaigns in cross-country cycling. Anna secured gold in round 5 of the 2023 British National Cycling Cross Country Series in the elite female category. At the 2023 British Cycling National Cross-Country MTB Championships Anna claimed bronze with a time of 33:04.010. At the UEC Mountain bike European Continental Championships Charlie Aldridge secured a bronze medal in the U23 Men’s Cross-Country division. Most recently at the British XC National Short Track Championships in Tong Charlie won an impressive gold medal. Image Swimming Success At the Scottish National Open Championships, there were also some brilliant results from our athletes. The highlights included 15 Gold Medals, 16 silvers, 13 Bronzes, 2 National Records and 4 Scottish championship titles. Scott Gibson had an incredible performance in the 50m Backstroke, setting a new Scottish Record in the semi-finals and went on to beat his own record again during the final with a time of 24.83 seconds. Taking to the national stage, Nicole Ricci was selected for the Luxembourg National Team in the U23 European Championships. Kara Hanlon represented team GB at her first World Championships with an impressive set of swims. At the World Para Swimming World Championships Stephen Clegg has also had an extraordinary set of results as part of Team GB Securing a new British record in the 100m Backstroke (S12) and claiming Gold and another silver medal in the 100m Butterfly (S12).
