Edinburgh Athletes go for gold at the 2024 Aquatics GB Swimming Championships

Last week 39 University of Edinburgh students travelled to London to take part in the 2024 Aquatics GB Swimming Championships. 

Expertly led by the Performance coaching team Mat Trodden and Chris Jones, the Edinburgh University Performance Swimming athletes displayed fantastic skill and determination to come away with 7 British Championship medals, 3 all-time top 10 British swims, Paralympic nomination times and an incredible 10 lifetime and 27 season bests. As the season progresses, we are sure to see more record-breaking results from athletes across the programme.

Day 1 

The Aquatics GB Swimming Championships kicked off on April 2nd with 12 athletes taking to the pool in the morning heats session. Luke Hornsey and Arthur Logan had a successful start to the championships, both securing their spots in the Men’s 200m Freestyle A-Finals. Luke finished in 6th place setting a new personal best of 3:53.30 whilst Arthur took 8th place. Ciara Schlosshan was next to take to the pool in the women’s 200m Butterfly qualifying for the A-Finals where she secured a 6th place finish. 

Following a successful morning swim, associated athlete Scott Quin took his lane in the Men’s multi-class 100m Breaststroke Para A-Finals to claim a silver medal with a time of 1:07.55. 

In the Men’s 100m Breaststroke heats Archie Goodburn claimed his spot in the A-Finals comfortably and had an outstanding performance in the final race claiming the bronze medal and a new personal best of 1:00.03. 

Day 2 

Day 2 brought more success as Kara Hanlon secured a centre lane with the fastest heat time in the Women’s 200m Breaststroke alongside Anna Morgan. Anna improved on her morning swim by 2 seconds to claim 5th place whilst Kara repeated her success in the evening A-Final, winning gold and becoming British Champion with a new personal best of 2:24.59. 

In the men’s multi-class 100m Backstroke, Stephen Clegg claimed the British Champion title in the Para A-Finals whilst successfully swimming under the Paris Paralympic Nomination time finishing in 1:00.83.

Day 3 

In the first final event of Day 3 Luke Hornsey took to the pool again securing a top 8 finish and new personal best of 15:45.61 in the Men’s 1500m Freestyle event. 

Katie Goodburn swam a new personal best of 25.87 in the Women’s 50m Freestyle heats to secure her place in the evening A-Finals where she managed to break her PB once again to finish 6th with a time of 25.73. 

In the Men’s 100m Freestyle heats David Cumberlidge confirmed his spot in the evening final where he finished in 6th place.  

Stephen Clegg returned to the pool once again for the men’s multi-class 100m Freestyle heats securing his spot in the A-Finals where he swam in another Paris Paralympic Nomination time and took home his second gold medal of the Championships.  

Day 4 

Day 4 began with the Men’s 100m Butterfly heats where Thomas Carswell claimed the final spot in the evening A-Final where he finished 8th, 

In his 3rd event of the championships Stephen Clegg entered the finals as top seed in the Men’s Multi-class 100m Butterfly alongside James Clegg. In the Para A-Final both athletes had impressive swims with James finishing in 5th place and Stephen claiming his 3rd British Champion title and his 3rd Paralympic Nomination time in 4 days.

Day 5 

The penultimate day of the championships saw Luke Hornsey secure another A-Final spot in the 800m Freestyle. Luke had an impressive race finishing in the top 5 with a new Personal Best of 8:06.04 and secured a time well under the European Junior consideration time. 

Ciara Schlosshan was the next to take on another A-Final also finishing in 5th place in the 100m butterfly in 59.49. 

Archie Goodburn and David Cumberlidge narrowly missed out on the podium in their races with Archie finishing in 4th in the men’s 200m Breaststroke with a time of 2:13.64 and David also claiming 4th in the men’s 50m Freestyle in 21.98. 

Stephen Clegg closed out his incredible run in the Championships with another British Para Champion title in the men’s multi-class 50m freestyle bringing his medal total to 4 for the week and narrowly missing out on another Paralympic nomination time finishing in 24.66 seconds. 

Day 6 

The final day brought more medal success for Edinburgh University as Kara Hanlon and Anna Morgan took their lanes in the women’s 100m breaststroke finals. Anna Morgan had an impressive race finishing in 6th place with a new personal best of 1:08.61. Kara had an extremely tight race for gold, narrowly missing out and only 0.30 seconds from an Olympic nomination time securing the silver medal and a fantastic new personal best of 1:08.60.
