Men’s Scottish Varsity Rugby Match returns to the HIVE Stadium

The date has been confirmed for the return of one of Scotland’s most historic university sporting fixtures. The 2025 Men’s Scottish Varsity Rugby Match will take place on Saturday, 20th September at the HIVE Stadium, Edinburgh, the home of Edinburgh Rugby.

Thanks to the continued partnership with Scottish Rugby and Edinburgh Rugby, this iconic fixture between the University of St Andrews RFC and Edinburgh University RFC will once again take centre stage at a professional rugby venue.

Following a crowd of over 4,500 spectators last year, both universities are aiming for a sell-out this year at Edinburgh Rugby’s capacity ground.

This celebrated match between Scotland’s two oldest university rugby clubs boasts a history stretching back over 160 years, predating even the renowned Oxford vs Cambridge Varsity Match. Formed in 1857 and 1858 respectively, Edinburgh University RFC and St Andrews RFC are among the oldest rugby clubs in the world, with only Edinburgh Academical FC having a longer continuous history in Scotland.
