Edinburgh Athletes awarded Winning Students 100 Scholarships

24 University athletes have been awarded Winning Students 100 Scholarships for the 2024/25 academic year.

The programme which is funded by Sport Scotland and the Scottish Funding Council aims to support student athletes along their performance pathways, enhancing international levels of success and helping student athletes balance their studies with high performance training and competition. Winning Students 100 provides athletes with grants of up to £3000 and works with colleges and universities to offer additional support such as academic flexibility.

Amongst the 24 athletes from The University of Edinburgh are swimmer Ciara Schlosshan and hockey player Lunijika Nyirenda. Ciara is a European Junior Bronze medalist in the 200m Butterfly and a World Junior finalist in the 200m Individual Medley. She has claimed eight Scottish medals and has been instrumental in Edinburgh's dominance at BUCS, earning multiple medals and contributing significantly to the team’s overall success. Lunijika (Jika) is a Scottish International Hockey Player who has already won 5 caps at senior level. She also captained Scotland Under 21's at the European Championships.

I’m so grateful to have been given the scholarship from winning students. I found it hard to combine the commitments of being a student athlete with part time work and this scholarship has allowed me to focus my energy on medical school and hockey. The support from winning students has definitely benefited me in all areas of life as a performance athlete.

I am incredibly proud to be a Winning Students scholar. This scholarship not only enables me to excel in my training and competitions but also supports me in achieving my academic goals. Having such strong support and belief in my potential to succeed both in the pool and at university truly motivates me. I’m thrilled to be among some of Scotland’s top student-athletes and grateful for the opportunity to further push my limits in both sport and education.
