8 University of Edinburgh Students have been selected to represent the GB team at the Orienteering World University Championships. Image The athletes who have been selected to represent GB Students on behalf of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland will travel to Bansko, Bulgaria to take part in the competition from 1st-5th August 2024. The competition comprises of four events including a sprint, sprint relay, middle distance and relay. Director of Sport and Active Health, Mark Munro commented on the impressive achievement which sees Edinburgh University students make up around two thirds of the GB squad, Being selected to represent Great Britain & Northern Ireland at the FISU World University Orienteering Championships is a tremendous honour, and to have eight athletes from the University of Edinburgh chosen speaks volumes about the calibre of talent and dedication within our sports programmes. With eight athletes comprising a significant portion of the GB&NI team, Edinburgh proudly upholds its reputation as the leading UK university in orienteering. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all eight athletes and our Sport Union's Polly Pearse, who serves as a team manager, as they embark on this remarkable journey. Their achievements exemplify the spirit of excellence and perseverance that defines our university community, and we stand united in wishing them every success at the championships. The selection comes after a series of excellent results from the students at the BUCS Orienteering Championships which took place in March this year. Sport Scholar Fiona Bunn claimed the championship title in the individual and relay races alongside relay teammates Rachel Brown (2nd individual) and Isobel Howard (4th individual). Niamh Hunter claimed bronze in the individual race and a silver medal with Eilidh Campbell (6th individual) in the relay race. In the men's races David Bunn was named BUCS champion and claimed a silver relay medal. Teammates Euan Tryner (4th individual) and James Bailey (6th Individual) claimed gold in the men's relay to cement their spot in the Orienteering World University Championships.
