It has been another spectacular year of sport, with a staggering 1220 BUCS fixtures, this season has been one to remember. Currently, the University of Edinburgh sits in 5th place in the overall British University and College Sports (BUCS) points table and is on target to surpass the overall points total from the previous season in 2022/23. Image This year 126 teams were entered into the league and knockout competition, with 15 teams winning their BUCS league and 2 teams becoming SSS league champions, which is an amazing achievement. Three teams have earned well-deserved promotions to their premiership leagues, while four teams remain with an opportunity to secure promotion. With over 750 entries into BUCS events so far across 37 BUCS events, there are still 13 upcoming events. Orienteering and Jiu Jitsu have excelled in their events, proudly finishing at the top of their BUCS tables, with Archery and Rifle also topping the tables after some stand-out performances this year. The Orienteering club dominated at the BUCS Orienteering Championships, winning for the 10th consecutive year and this year winning all 6 titles available, demonstrating the strength and depth of the team and programme at the university. Archery, who are only part way through their season, have excelled. 16 athletes qualified for BUCS Indoor Finals following the regional qualifiers, the second most of any university. They finished top of the medal table with 4 golds, 1 silver, and 1 bronze. Snowsports have also succeeded this year, with 11 podium places at the British Universities Dry Slope Championships, securing over 60 BUCS points from the event. Following that they competed at the BUCS Indoor Championships and came away with a further 4 podium places and 40 points leaving them a close 2nd in the BUCS Snowsports table. Image The journey to cup finals this year was exciting, with 14 teams securing their spots at Conference Cup Finals and 6 having the honour of competing at BUCS Big Wednesday. The teams showed their skill and competitiveness, with four Conference Cup wins from Badminton 2’s, Men’s Hockey 3’s, Netball 3’s and Women’s Volleyball 2’s and one Conference Trophy win from Men’s Football 4’s. At BUCS Big Wednesday, Women’s Badminton 1’s, Women’s Hockey 2’s, and Women’s Volleyball 1’s secured BUCS Trophy titles and Women’s Fencing 1’s won the BUCS Championship title. Another highlight of the year was BUCS Nationals weekend, where 122 athletes competed across 6 sports and brought back an impressive 30 medals.
