Winter Sporting Success

Edinburgh University athletes and staff have enjoyed a magnificent array of success over the festive season.

Murray Dickson Makes History

A First year student from the School of Engineering, Murray Dickson became the first Scot in a decade to be selected for the senior Great Britain men's water polo team. Murray competed at the World Aquatics Water Polo World Cup which took place from 18 - 24 December in Turkey. The team finished their World Cup Division Two campaign in 10th place.

Stephen Clegg named in New Years Honours

Paralympian and associated athlete Stephen Clegg was named in King Charles III’s latest new years honours list and appointed a Member of the British Empire for services to swimming. The accolade follows a successful summer of sport for Clegg who represented Great Britain at the 2024 Paris Olympics and went on to claim two gold medals in the 100m backstroke and 100m butterfly events.

Archie Goodburn at Swimming World Short Course Championships

5th Year Chemical Engineering student Archie Goodburn made his World Short Course debut for Great Britain. Archie matched his personal best in the 100m Breaststroke (57.81) and had a new season’s best in the 50m Breaststroke with a time of 26.51. He also swam in the heats of the Men’s 4x100m Medley Relay, which placed 13th overall in the world. Archie, who was awarded the principals medal at the 2024 winter graduation ceremonies, looks set to continue his success as he works towards the British Championships in April.

Sarah Calvert claims victory at Scottish 3000m Championships

Medical Student, Sarah Calvert entered the new year with a PB run which saw her claim victory in the Scottish 3000m Championships. Sarah competed in the Senior Women's division completing only her 3rd ever 3000m race in a time of 9:15.67. As the season continues Sarah hopes to work towards the British championships.

Lisa Brown Debuts for Edinburgh Rugby

History and Scottish History first year student, Lisa Brown made history for Edinburgh Rugby as the youngest women's team debutant at only 17 years old. Lisa debuts on January 4th at Hive Stadium against Brython Thunder where the squad, made up of a number of Edinburgh University students and alumni and headed up by Claire Cruickshank, finished with a convincing 22-15 win against the opposition.

World University Winter Games

Coming into the new year student athletes and staff members will be making their way to Italy’s Piemonte region to take part in the 2025 FISU World University Winter Games which take place 13-23rd January.Mechanical engineering student, Euan Rogers who has been part of the Great Britain set up for a number of years will be taking part in the fames as part of the Snowboarding line up having recently returned from an ACL injury.Co-President of the University's Ice Hockey Club and a Vet Med student, Jessie Mulloy will return to the Winter World University Games for a second time as part of the Women's Ice Hockey team.Staff member Neil Rankin will also travel to Torino as part of the support staff taking on the role of deputy chef de mission where he will assist in the in the management and delivery of the GB Students delegation.We wish everyone the best of luck in the upcoming games.
