Sir Peter Heatly

A self-taught diver, Peter Heatly dominated the sport in Scotland for more than 20 years and won no less than five Commonwealth Games medals.

He was the East of Scotland champion from 1937 to 1939 and then Scottish champion from 1946 to 1958. In three consecutive Commonwealth Games, he was a gold medallist. At the Auckland Games of 1950, he won the 10-metre platform title and also took the silver medal in the 3-metre springboard. In 1954 in Vancouver, he won the gold medal in the 3-metre springboard and bronze in the 10-metre platform. And at the Cardiff Games of 1958, he won gold in the 10-metre platform. He also competed in two Olympic Games: London in 1948 and Helsinki in 1952.

A distinguished career in sports management saw him become chairman of the Scottish Sports Council (now sportscotland) from 1975 to 1987, and chairman of the Commonwealth Games Federation from 1982 to 1990.

He was awarded a CBE in 1971 for services to sport and in 1992 he was knighted. In 2002, he was inducted into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame.
