Founded in 1857 and 1858 respectively, Edinburgh University RFC and the University of St Andrews RFC rank among the oldest rugby clubs in the world, with only Edinburgh Academical FC boasting a longer history in Scotland. This storied fixture, stretching back over 160 years, is believed to predate the famous annual Oxford versus Cambridge Varsity Match.

The 2025 Scottish Varsity Match, eagerly anticipated by fans, alumni, and rugby fans alike, was hosted for the second consecutive year at Hive Stadium, thanks to the partnerships launched in 2024 between the universities and Edinburgh Rugby.

In a thrilling contest, Edinburgh University edged out the University of St Andrews with a 26-23 victory. Both teams traded leads and delivered moments of exceptional skill, keeping the crowd on the edge of their seats. Edinburgh claimed an early advantage and maintained a narrow lead despite a determined comeback from St. Andrews. By halftime, Edinburgh held the upper hand with a score of 6-11 . During the second half, St Andrews surged with two quick tries, but it wasn’t enough in the face of Edinburgh’s resilience and precise execution throughout the match, which ultimately secured their triumph, capped by a decisive try in the final minute.

The atmosphere inside Hive Stadium was electric. Both sets of fans were as loud and passionate as each other, driving their teams forward and adding to the intensity of the contest. Every big tackle and score met with an eruption of noise, making it a true celebration of university rugby.

The match highlighted Edinburgh’s ability to capitalise on key moments while showcasing the enduring rivalry and camaraderie between the two universities. With an electric atmosphere and passionate support from both sides, the 2025 Scottish Varsity Match once again celebrated not only competition but the sportsmanship and spirit that define this historic fixture.
