Brave Performances on Day Three in Paris

Monday saw four of our athletes in action in Paris kicking off with Lisa Thomson in the Rugby 7’s when they took on South Africa in their final Group match. After falling behind to two early tries the GB squad fought back to take a comeback victory 26-17 and set up a Quarter Final tie against USA.

After a great start for Team GB in the Quarter Final, the USA fought back in what was a gruelling encounter that went all the way only for Team GB to be on the wrong side of a 17-7 scoreline to end their chances of a medal.

In between those Rugby 7’s matches saw Charlie Aldridge take the early pace in the Men’s Cross Country Mountain Biking on a very tricky course for the riders. Charlie put on a very brave performance and at the half way stage was in a great position battling it out for the medals.

Charlie then suffered, what looked like a nasty fall, but got back up and continued through to the end to take eighth place on his Olympic debut, a truly fantastic performance by the World U23 Champion. Hopefully the first of many Olympic Games for this talented rider.

The final action for University athletes was for Sarah Robertson and Amy Costello who were in action for Team GB in Women’s Hockey when they faced Australia in their second group match. A couple of early goals saw Team GB two down at the interval but had shown glimpses of getting back in the match.

However, as they pushed for the goal to get them back in the game they were caught at the back and lost another couple of goals to eventually lose out 4-0. The squad have two group games remaining to get points on the board.
