Edinburgh Faces Hartpury in First Women’s BUCS Super Rugby Clash

British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) has launched the Women’s BUCS Super Rugby League for the 2024-2025 season, a development of the Women’s National League.

The Women's BUCS Super Rugby league joins the top level of Men’s rugby union as BUCS’ second ‘Super’ level of competition. Women’s BUCS Super Rugby will provide an enhanced platform to aid female players at institutions in England, Wales and Scotland to develop their game alongside pursuing higher education.

The historic match on Friday 13th September will take place at The Hive Stadium, Edinburgh, ahead of the men's friendly between Gloucester and Edinburgh Rugby. Both universities have strong partnerships with professional rugby teams, enhancing the experience for players through shared facilities and performance programmes.

Claire Cruikshank, Head of Performance Ladies Rugby at University of Edinburgh said: “Playing in the first-ever Women’s BUCS Super Rugby match is a great moment for us at Edinburgh University. Facing the current champions, Hartpury University, is a significant challenge, but one we are relishing.”

The Ladies Rugby 1st Team Captain, Hannah Walker, added, “We’re really excited to play at the Hive against Hartpury. Many of the players have experience training and playing at the stadium through performance programmes or with Edinburgh Rugby.”

The opening game kicks off on September 13th, with Edinburgh facing Hartpury at The Hive, Murrayfield, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter in women’s university rugby.

Tickets for the event are available to Edinburgh fans, with one ticket granting access to both the women's match and the Gloucester vs. Edinburgh Rugby fixture.
