Founded in 1857 and 1858, respectively, Edinburgh University RFC and the University of St Andrews RFC are among the oldest rugby clubs in the world, with only Edinburgh Academical FC having a longer history in Scotland. This fixture, dating back more than 160 years, is believed to predate the annual Oxford versus Cambridge Varsity Match.

The eagerly awaited 2024 Scottish Varsity Match was facilitated by Edinburgh rugby at Hive Stadium.  Following the launch of a partnership with the university and Edinburgh Rugby earlier in the year, the institutions have been working together to support each other both on and off the pitch, including in the planning of the Scottish Varsity Match.

The match saw the University of St Andrews emerge victorious over the University of Edinburgh, securing a final score of 13-24. It was an exciting contest, with both teams exchanging leads and delivering exceptional plays.

Edinburgh secured an early lead of 5-0 within the first 15 minutes and managed to hold onto a narrow advantage, with the half-time score standing at 8-5. However, St Andrews came back strongly in the second half. Despite Edinburgh’s display of persistence and skill throughout the match, they ultimately fell short against a formidable St Andrews side.

St Andrews demonstrated excellent execution and the ability to seize key moments during the game. The atmosphere was electric, with the crowd bringing incredible support to their teams, highlighting the sense of camaraderie and sportsmanship between the rival universities, which embodies the spirit of the Scottish Varsity Match.
