Mixed emotions for students over opening weekend of The Olympics

The Olympics were officially opened on Friday night with the opening ceremony along the River Seine and University of Edinburgh athletes were straight into action the following morning.

Seonaid McIntosh was first up in the mixed team 10m air rifle qualification but unfortunately missed out on qualifying for the final. Seonaid was back in action on Sunday in her bid to qualify for the individual 10m air rifle final but faced technical issues when she noticed problems with her rifle in the warm up.

Coach, and father, Donald McIntosh, a University hall of famer, was on hand to fix the issue with the rifle but unfortunately it wasn’t enough as Seonaid missed out in the final. Seonaid will be back in action later in the week in the 50m air rifle qualification.

Lucy Hope was part of the 4x100m freestyle quartet who qualified for the final and put in a strong performance in the final to take 7th place.

Lisa Thomson and the GB Sevens squad were in action on Sunday in their opening two group matches. They produced an impressive 21 – 12 win over Ireland to open up their campaign but suffered a 36 -5 defeat to world champions Australia. They go again today when they take on South Africa in their final group game.

Oli Wilkes was in action in the mens fours and the quartert finished an impressive 2nd in their heat to progress to Thursdays final.

Finally, Sarah Robertson and Amy Costello were in action in Team GBs opening hockey group match when they took on Spain. Unfortunately the team came out on the wrong side of a 2-1 scoreline. They are back in action today when they take on Australia.
