Preparing the Next Cohort of Sports Union Committee Members: Learning and Development Week 2026

The University of Edinburgh Sports Union recently delivered its annual Learning and Development Week, welcoming the next cohort of student committee members for the 2026/27 academic year.

Designed to equip incoming volunteers with the knowledge, confidence, and skills required to lead their clubs effectively, the week highlighted the Sports Union’s ongoing commitment to developing student leaders and enhancing club experience.

Learning and Development Week provided a structured and supportive introduction to committee roles, ensuring that students feel prepared to take on the responsibilities that come with leading a sports club. From governance and finance to wellbeing, inclusion, and event planning, the programme covered all key areas required to run a successful and sustainable club. Across the week, over 20 sessions were delivered by 16 facilitators, with more than 450 students engaging in a wide range of workshops. This strong level of attendance reflects both the enthusiasm of incoming committee members and the value placed on development opportunities within the sports union.

A key theme throughout the week was empowering students to lead with confidence and purpose. Committee members play a vital role in shaping the culture, success, and sustainability of their clubs. Therefore, Learning and Development Week aimed to ensure student volunteers feel supported in delivering positive experiences for all members. The programme also encouraged collaboration and knowledge sharing across clubs, helping to build a stronger and more connected community.

The University of Edinburgh Sports Union looks forward to seeing this new cohort of leaders put their learning into practice and make a lasting impact across the student sport landscape.
